Prevention before departure

Midship location, fresh air and eyes on the horizon help many. Heavy meals, a lot of alcohol and close screens in swell are better avoided.

If you are sensitive, discuss remedies and a plan with a doctor or pharmacist before sailing – not only in the middle of waves.

  • Prefer a midship cabin (when booking)
  • First dose / patch on time per the label
  • Light food and enough fluids (without excess)

Cabin location & ship type

Location often matters more than inside vs. window: midships and not right on top/forward reduces motion. Some need a view out, others dark quiet – that is individual.

Large ships (many AIDA / Mein Schiff vessels) often roll less than small expedition ships – stability still depends on weather, course and region (North Sea, Bay of Biscay, open Caribbean).

When it hits you

If you feel unwell: go on deck, breathe calmly, fix the horizon, light food. Lying down with eyes closed helps some – others feel worse.

Ship pharmacy and medical team are there – have serious symptoms, strong dehydration or known conditions checked. Pack your own proven remedies as well.

  • Fix the horizon, fresh air
  • Use remedies early, not only at peak nausea
  • Quiet over disco and tight crowds in swell

What seasickness is not

Short nausea when casting off or on the first night is common and often passes once your body finds the rhythm. Ongoing strong symptoms are not something to “tough out”.

Children and older guests can be more sensitive – dose and remedy choice age-appropriate and after professional advice.

In short

  • Does an inside cabin help against seasickness?

Not necessarily. Location matters more than a window. Some need a view out, others dark quiet.

  • Are remedies available onboard?

Yes, typically in the boutique or via the ship’s doctor – also pack your own proven remedies.

  • Is the Baltic or Mediterranean “safer”?

Often calmer than open-ocean passages – but wind and weather can create swell anywhere. There is no absolute guarantee.

  • Acupressure bands and ginger – useful?

Some swear by them as a supplement. If you are highly sensitive they are often not enough alone – combine with proven remedies and location.
