Get married with AIDA 2026 – plan ceremony onboard or in port
Getting married with AIDA often means a ceremony onboard or in port, a celebration with club-ship atmosphere and guests on deck – but not automatically a marriage recognised in Germany. Legal validity, documents, packages and the ceremony slot in the itinerary must be clear before booking. This is practical orientation; the cruise line, registry office and current advice are binding.

Legally binding or symbolic?
Whether a ceremony onboard or in port counts as a civil marriage depends on the ship’s flag, the place of the ceremony, the authorities involved and the partners’ home law. A “captain’s wedding” is not automatically valid in Germany.
Many couples therefore combine: a civil marriage ashore (Germany or the port state) plus a symbolic or festive ceremony onboard. When in doubt, ask early at the registry office, immigration authority and AIDA wedding service – this is not general legal advice.

Documents & preparation
Typically required (depending on the case): valid passports/IDs, birth certificates, certificates of no impediment / capacity to marry, plus translations and apostilles where needed. International couples and previous marriages often need more lead time.
Deadlines can run from weeks to months. Collect documents early and align deadlines with the booked departure – otherwise the ceremony date may no longer fit the itinerary.

Timing with the itinerary
The ceremony must fit the schedule: a sea day with a calm deck, a port call with enough time alongside, or a fixed slot in the onboard programme. Manoeuvres, weather and port authorities can shift plans – build in buffer.
Guests travelling only for the ceremony need cabin inventory and possibly the line’s day-visitor rules. Block family travel and wedding dates early in peak season (summer, Christmas, New Year).

Packages, photos & reception – orientation
AIDA and partners typically offer wedding packages with a ceremony framework, décor, champagne/toast and optional photo/video. Scope and prices change – we deliberately name no euro amounts; ask AIDA or your tour operator for current packages and availability.
Also budget: a reception or dinner for guests, hair/styling, flowers and possibly a land transfer to the registry office in port. The cruise fare choice (drinks FUN/ALL IN, cabin category) remains relevant independently of the wedding package.

Frequently asked questions
Is the onboard ceremony legally valid?
Not automatically. It depends on flag, place, authorities and home law. Many couples marry civilly ashore and celebrate onboard. Binding advice: registry office and cruise line – no blanket guarantee here.
Which documents do I need to marry with AIDA?
At minimum valid ID documents; often also certificates of capacity to marry / no impediment, civil-status records and translations if required. International cases need more lead time. Request a current checklist from AIDA and the competent authority.
Can you marry only symbolically?
Yes. A festive ceremony without civil effect is the simpler option for many couples – especially if the marriage has already been (or will be) concluded ashore.
When should you book the wedding cruise?
Early – document deadlines, preferred ship and guest cabins need lead time. Popular dates (summer, holidays) and balcony locations sell out quickly. Align package availability with the cruise in parallel.
