Sub-regions

Classic fjords, Northern Norway to the North Cape, and departures from Germany.

  • Classic fjords

Bergen, Flåm/Aurland, Geiranger and Stavanger – the iconic fjord calls on most summer routes.

    • Bergen as a must-call
    • Geiranger & Flåm
    • Short to medium distances
    • Ideal for first-timers
  • Northern Norway & North Cape

Longer routes toward Tromsø, Honningsvåg/North Cape and often a Svalbard stepping stone – more sea days, more nature.

    • North Cape & midnight sun
    • Tromsø & near the Lofoten
    • Often 10–14 nights
    • Plan for weather changes
  • Departure from Germany

Many Norway trips start in Kiel or Hamburg – short travel, then straight toward the Skagerrak and the Norwegian coast.

    • Kiel as a classic
    • Hamburg & Warnemünde
    • Possible without a flight
    • Good rail/car access

Tips for Norway & fjords

  • Weather & clothing

Even in July it can be cool, wet and windy. Layers and a good rain jacket matter more than summer dresses alone.

  • Fjords vs North Cape

Classic fjord routes are more relaxed and shorter. North Cape routes need more time and handle weather changes better with buffer.

  • Book excursions early

The Flåm railway, Geiranger viewpoints and North Cape tours sell out quickly in peak season – especially on large ships.

In short

  • When is the best time for a Norway cruise?

May to September. For midnight sun in the north, June and July are best. May and September are quieter but cooler.

  • Can I start without a flight?

Yes. Many trips start in Kiel, Hamburg or Warnemünde – one of the big advantages versus the Mediterranean or Caribbean.

  • Fjords or North Cape – which to choose?

For starters, classic fjord routes with Bergen are enough. North Cape pays off if you want longer trips and far-northern nature.
