Why shipyards matter for cruise fans

Shipyards explain why ships of a class look so similar, which propulsion arrives onboard and when a newbuild actually enters service. For German-speaking guests Papenburg is especially tangible: many AIDA ships and international newbuilds launch there – often with a webcam view into the halls.

From building dock to delivery

Large cruise ships are assembled in covered docks. After technical trials comes the transfer – in Papenburg along the Ems toward the North Sea. Then sea trials and handover to the cruise line follow.

What to watch at shipyards

• Webcam ≠ live ship

  Yard webcams show building docks and halls – not the position of the finished ship at sea. That is what ship radar and each ship page are for.

• Class and sister ships

  Ships of a class (e.g. Helios) often share hull and technology. If you know Nova, you will find similar structures on Cosma – and vice versa.

• From yard to voyage

  After the build context, jump to cruise-line profile, live position and find a cruise – that is where concrete trip planning starts.

• Which shipyard builds AIDA ships?

  Many current and older AIDA ships come from Meyer Werft in Papenburg (e.g. AIDAnova, AIDAcosma and the Sphinx class). There are exceptions: AIDAprima and AIDAperla were built at Mitsubishi in Nagasaki, for example.

• Is there a Meyer Werft webcam?

• What is the difference between Meyer Papenburg and Meyer Turku?

  Both belong to the Meyer Group but are separate yards. Papenburg (Germany) is known for many AIDA newbuilds; Turku (Finland) builds Mein Schiff units for TUI Cruises among others.

• Can I visit a shipyard?

  Meyer Werft runs a visitor centre in Papenburg. Opening hours, tickets and current offers are on the yard website. Other yards often have limited or no public tours.
