Ship description

The RMS Queen Mary 2 is one of the largest cruise ships in the world and the flagship of the traditional British shipping company Cunard Line. It was put into service in 2003 and most recently modernized in Hamburg in 2016. It offers space for 2620 passengers on 13 decks, who are looked after by 1250 employees. As the only remaining transatlantic liner, she still undertakes 6-day scheduled passages between Southampton, Hamburg and New York. Most information is also available on the ship in German, but basic knowledge of English is recommended.

Construction of the Queen Mary 2

The Queen Mary was designed to pass the Verrazano Narrows Bridge in New York, which is the lowest obstacle on the New York – Southampton route. When the ship crosses the bridge, the distance between the bridge and the highest point of the ship just 2 meters. The ship was designed primarily for the Atlantic crossing, so the material thickness is 30mm. The hull and superstructure are made of steel. The life of the ship is designed for 40 years.

At 37, the number of lifeboats does not actually correspond to the safety standard, but an exemption was granted for the Queen Mary 2.

In contrast to other cruise ships, the public areas such as the cinema, dining room or theater are located within the hull contour on the first decks. Above that are the standard cabins, and above them the higher-quality cabins, as well as bars, restaurants and the wellness area.

Machines and technical equipment

The Queen Mary 2’s machinery can be described as unique among the multitude of cruise ships. The electric propulsion consists of six generators driven by four 16-cylinder diesel engines and two gas turbines. The electric motors, each with an output of 16,800 KW, drive four powerful ship’s propellers and allow a speed of around 25 to 30 knots. The consumption is around 500 tons of fuel per day.
